Depending on print callouts and regulations, there are certain standards that fasteners such as bolts must abide by. One such instance is ASTM A490 which provides the ordinances for “heavy hex structural bolts made from alloy steel.”

Depending on whether you're working in Imperial or Metric Units ASTM A490 is specifically deemed Standard Specification for Structural Bolts, Alloy Steel, Heat Treated, 150 ksi Minimum Tensile Strength (I) or Standard Specification for High-Strength Steel Bolts, Classes 10.9 and 10.9.3, for Structural Steel Joints (M). In comparisons to other standards ASTM A490 bolts are similar to ASTM A325 but have improved strength. ASTM A490 also covers the American Association State Highway and Transportation Officials Standard AASHTO M-253.

ASTM A490 bolts are intended for structural applications which means they are not only of a stronger grade but also feature shorter threaded lengths of the bolt to avoid interference with the joint. There are now two different types of grades for both Imperial and Metric ASTM A490 bolts which are Type 1 Type 2, and Type 3 as indicated by varying grade identification markings on the bolt heads. Type 2 was withdrawn from the specification in 2002.

Imperial Specs

  • ASTM A490 Type 1 -  1/2” to 1-1/2” nominal size, 120 ksi proof strength, 130 ksi minimum yield strength, 150 min to 173 max tensile strength (ksi), C33-38 core hardness (Rockwell).
  • ASTM A490 Type 3 -  1/2” to 1-1/2” nominal size, 120 ksi proof strength, 130 ksi minimum yield strength, 150 min to 173 max tensile strength (ksi), C33-38 core hardness (Rockwell).

Metric Specs

  • ASTM A490M Type 1 – 12mm to 36mm nominal size, 830 proof strength (MPa), 940 minimum yield strength (MPa), 1040 minimum tensile strength (MPa), C33-39 core hardness (Rockwell)
  • ASTM A490M Type 3 – 12mm to 36mm nominal size, 830 proof strength (MPa), 940 minimum yield strength (MPa), 1040 minimum tensile strength (MPa), C33-39 core hardness (Rockwell)
